Cheung Chau Bun Festival and Ping On Bun
Date: 22/05/2026
The Chinese Language Department and the National Education Committee co-organized a thematic talk titled “Cheung Chau Bun Festival and Ping On Bun” on 22 May 2026 (Friday) from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., inviting Dr. Sze Chi-ming, Council Member of the Hong Kong History Society, as the guest speaker. Dr. Sze has long specialized in the study of Hong Kong’s local history, community culture, and folk traditions, and is a leading scholar in the field. In the talk, he provided junior form students with an in‑depth introduction to this local traditional festival, which was inscribed onto the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011, and explained key elements of the Cheung Chau Bun Festival—including its blessing rituals, the Bun Tower, and the symbolic Ping On Bun—highlighting Hong Kong’s unique folk beliefs, community cohesion, and cultural heritage. Students were highly engaged throughout the session, showing strong interest in the Bun-snatching Competition, the meaning of the Ping On Bun, and the cultural stories behind the festival, and raised thoughtful questions that reflected their growing curiosity and understanding of local culture. Through this talk, the school aims to help students appreciate intangible cultural heritage within both national and Hong Kong cultural contexts, strengthen national education, foster a sense of national identity, deepen their appreciation of Chinese culture, and reflect on the importance of cultural conservation in contemporary society.
