Model United Nations Study Tour to Poland
A delegation of nine dedicated students has successfully returned from an inspiring and transformative study tour to Poland, where they participated in a prestigious international Model United Nations (MUN) competition from 19 to 25 February 2026.
The students from Form Three to Form Five skillfully took on the role as diplomats from different nations across four United Nations committees, engaging in rigorous debates and negotiations entirely in English.
Skills Forged Through Diplomatic Challenge
In the months leading up to the conference, students undertook intensive research into their assigned countries' positions on critical global issues. Committee topics included addressing AI-generated pornography's impact on women (UN Women), systematic human rights violations in military recruitment and veteran treatment (Human Rights Council), combating obesity with emphasis on Pacific nations (WHO), and countering the increasing threat of Amphetamine-Type Stimulants (UNODC).
Throughout the conference, participants demonstrated and refined essential skills that extend far beyond the committee room. Public speaking and debate skills were sharpened as students articulated their assigned nations' positions with clarity and conviction under pressure. Critical thinking and analytical abilities were tested through the need to rapidly assess complex international issues from multiple perspectives. The art of diplomatic negotiation and compromise was practiced constantly, as delegates built consensus while defending their countries' interests. Most valuably, students cultivated cultural empathy and global awareness, learning to understand worldviews vastly different from their own and finding common ground across cultural and political divides.
Learning from Poland's Living History
The setting of Poland proved profoundly educational beyond the conference halls. As a nation whose history encompasses medieval glory, tragic partition, wartime occupation, communist rule, and democratic rebirth, Poland offered students a living classroom in European history and diplomacy.
Visiting Warsaw's historic sites—including Auschwitz Concentration Camp and POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews —deepened students' understanding of how historical trauma continues to shape national foreign policy positions. These experiences illuminated why international institutions like the United Nations emerged from the ashes of conflict and why human rights protections remain central to global governance. Students gained firsthand insight into how the past influenced contemporary diplomatic relationships and national perspectives on security, sovereignty, and international cooperation. This historical awareness now informs their understanding of current global affairs in ways no textbook could achieve.
Lifelong Friendships Across Borders
Beyond the formal debates and historical exploration, the MUN experience proved fundamentally about friendship and international camaraderie. Students connected with peers from schools across Europe and beyond, building networks that transcend borders and will endure long after the conference ended.
Caucusing sessions, cultural exchanges during shared meals, and informal conversations between committee sessions created bonds grounded in mutual respect and shared intellectual passion. These connections taught students that diplomacy is ultimately about human understanding—that behind every national position paper are individuals with their own stories, aspirations, and perspectives. The friendships forged in the intensity of debate and the warmth of shared experience have become the foundation for a more interconnected and empathetic generation of global citizens.
A Transformative Educational Achievement
This study tour represents the successful culmination of the school's commitment to holistic education—developing not merely academic knowledge, but the complete set of skills, values, and perspectives necessary for students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
We extend our warmest congratulations to all participating students for their dedication, professionalism, and enthusiasm throughout this challenging and rewarding experience. Their success reflects the highest standards of Yuen Long Merchants Association Secondary School and augurs well for their future as globally-minded leaders.
